Primary focal hyperhidrosis is the most common type and affects the hands, soles of the feet and armpits (in some cases the face). There is no known specific cause for this disorder but it is associated with a hereditary factor.
Normal sweating occurs to allow the body to cool down and regulate body temperature. It is generated when we are exposed to high temperatures, during physical exercise and in stressful situations. In the case of hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating occurs without the need for these triggers. Stress and nervousness can worsen the situation.
People with hyperhidrosis may need to change their clothes several times a day and are often restricted to choosing specific colours so that sweat patches are not visible. These constraints end up having an impact on the person's emotional state, with many moments of embarrassment, anxiety and distress.
